A Bad Day

Falling asleep at 1AM
To an alarm that did not ring,
Waking up late
To a cup of coffee
That does not exist,
Running around in circles
Waiting for the water to heat
Only to find out
That the tap wasn’t fixed.

Late, late,
We seem to be late,
The day can’t get any worse,
But to challenge the mind
A task so easy,
It can turn the simplest of infractions
Into a punishment unheard.

To a breakfast
Long gone cold,
The runny eggs a mess of mush
And the soggy bread
A tasteless treat,
We sigh into our cups
The sound of defeat,
It surely can’t get any worse.

We walk, slog and drag ourselves to work
Carrying the weight of our day,
To a dirty desk and sticky chair
Surrounded by people with no names,
Drowning in the memories of a comfortable bed
A warm companion with no judgements,
Sighing through meetings with no end
Finding solutions for problems that never existed,
Could this day get any worse?

5PM and we stare at the clock
What matters time when nothing is done?
We sit at our ratty desk
And watch the sunlight burn,
Paper stacks taller than any tower we’ve ever seen
A monument to human idiosyncrasies,
The complex system of rewards we designed
To be achieved by only the rich or none at all,
This possibly couldn’t get any worse.

9PM and we slowly crawl into bed
Another day has ended,
Our minds fretting over tomorrow
And the tasks left undone,
Surprising how none of them are about what you love
The chores for someone else,
We are a species that thrives for a stranger
An architect of someone else’s dream,
What have we achieved?
The only thought before we fall asleep?
Surely tomorrow can’t be as bad as today.
